Regional branding is a vital step towards a truly integrated and effective regional marketing strategy. There are two primary reasons for this:

Internal Reasoning

It is necessary for all communities and stakeholders to feel that they are on the same page with a marketing strategy. In order to do this all parties must have a ‘buy-in’ to the process. If a unified brand has been developed with most stakeholders feeling that they have some ownership of the brand, they will be more likely to propagate the brand. Without businesses, government and citizens using the brand in their marketing activities, the brand image itself is useless. This is a grassroots effort that needs ground level support to succeed.

External Reasoning

The funding necessary to market a region and attract investment /tourism usually must be raised from sources outside the community – i.e. Provincial and federal programs, and private sector funding. Procuring funding and resources is much easier if these sources are convinced that the region is acting in a unified manner. Having a consistent brand image for the region is cornerstone of that effort. Marketing is primarily about communicating a message – and if the region can communicate that it is unified by common goals and will to work together towards those goals, outside investors/funders are much more likely to be involved.
