F.A.Q.

1. How would this impact the Stephenfield Reservoir?

It would actually add to firm flows at Stephenfield. Water from Stephenfield is fully allocated.

2. Can the Assiniboine really supply enough water for the diversion?

The amount of water that would be needed would be equal to a half day’s flow at Portage diversion and would only be drawn when the river flows significantly exceeds the downstream demands, such as during spring flood or late fall when Shellmouth is drawn down for winter. This  graph of spring flows on the Assiniboine and the amount that would be drawn shows the amount is nearly insignificant.

3. What’s the next step?

The feasibility studies. KGS Group has estimated the cost of the feasibility studies will be $500,000 – 100K for economic studies, $200K for environmental studies, and$200K for further engineering and design. This cost is included in the $69M total.

4. What’s the timeline?

Once the funding is in place, the remaining feasibility studies can be done concurrently, probably within a year. Then the political decisions need to be made, both federally and provincially. The actual building will be done over 2 years to allow for settling of the dam structure.

5. Why has The BVWI contracted with Kelwin Consulting and Outlook Market Research?

Over the years it has been suggested by a number of people that we need to hire professional consultants to assist us in obtaining funding from the two senior levels of government. We believe we now are in the position to push this regional project through to completion. Our 3 phase approach with our consultants include:

1-Clarifying the project with branding
2-Identify potential funding sources to complete the feasibility studies
3-Accessing the $500,000 to fund the study
